Back Again 2.3 (Seriously)

Beaker Blog will be a thing in 2024.

I think I've healed enough from my seven or eight divorces to get into this again.  Beakerblog may develop into a channel this year.  I will have to explore the possibilities since I don't live in Europe and it is difficult when the topic is quintessentially European .  The important thing is to do and blog about what I enjoy.  I look forward to the months ahead.

  4. Great to have you back mate. What do you make of the now confirmed news of R-L51 turning in 5 yamnaya samples from the recent Lazaradis preprint?

    I11838 - Krasnosamarskoe-4 site (Middle Volga steppe). R1b-L51, mtDNA U5a1a1. 2851-2498 calBCE.

I12823 - Smeeni (Romania, just west of the Black Sea). R1b-L51, mtDNA K1b2b. 3300-2500 BCE (estimate from archaeological context).

I6884 - Krestovyi kurgan (Rostov region, Aksay District, near Alitub village). R1b-L51, mtDNA T1a1. 2852-2500 calBCE.

I12893 - Idzhil-2 (Republic of Kalmykia, Oktyabrsky District, Idzhil Village). R1b-L51, mtDNA H13a1a. 3300-2600 BCE (estimate from archaeological context).

    1. Like buses - nothing, then five mysteriously turn up at once.
Only two could be early or mid Yamnaya, and these have dates simply 'estimated from archaeological context' over ranges 700 years long.
All but one are just 'L51', which had probably been around for over a thousand years before appearing in these sites.
Looks to me like L51 arrived in Yamnaya around 2700 BC, just as it was coming to an end. From where - who knows? Nothing from the Dnieper area. The oldest dated sample, and the only Beakerish L52, from the furthest West - Northern Serbia.

    2. Unlikely as oldest confirmed R1b-L52 are from afanasievo Shatar Chuluu 1 from Shatar Chuluu, Mongolia, and Nileke 5-3, from Nileke County, Xinjiang, China (also known as Nilka County). So if it was present in yamnaya’s sister culture there’s zero reason to believe it wasn’t there all along in yamnaya. They just branched off in repin phase.

    3. L51 probably was there in early Yamnaya, although in small numbers and minor significance, just as it was also probably spread thinly elsewhere. Basically, over its first thousand years or more, there's scant sign that its people had much impact until the Yamnayan decline and collapse, when one or two of its extended families prospered.
